Home Insurance

I'm glad that Sharon wrote that post about the insurance companies rescinding on the claims being made or making it difficult for people to apply for their payments. On the one hand, I feel angry that the people have to wait and put up with so much nonsense and get so little in return. On the other hand, I wonder about how well insurance companies are prepared to process full-scale catastrophes like Katrina or 9/11. Both events existed in the collective imagination as "never'll happen," so the fact that everyone was left shocked and unprepared makes sense (except for the government--they should have been prepared for anything, and weren't).

Or does it? Let me know what bits of information I've missed in making this observation.
